Γεννημένος στο Harrow του Middlesex στις 20 Νοεμβρίου 1944, ο Vernon εξελίχθηκε σε μία από τις κεντρικές μορφές της ανάπτυξης του βρετανικού blues‑rock. Ξεκίνησε να εργάζεται στη Decca Records το 1963 και γρήγορα ξεχώρισε ως παραγωγός με εξαιρετική ικανότητα να αναγνωρίζει νέα ταλέντα. Οι Duran Duran ηχογράφησαν μεγάλο μέρος του ντεμπούτου τους εκεί το 1981, ενώ οι Radiohead ηχογράφησαν το Pablo Honey (1993), συμπεριλαμβανομένου του “Creep”.

Μετά τη μετακόμισή του στην Ισπανία στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 2000, ο Vernon αποσύρθηκε σε μεγάλο βαθμό από τη μουσική βιομηχανία, αλλά επέστρεψε στην παραγωγή το 2010–11, συνεργαζόμενος με σύγχρονους blues καλλιτέχνες όπως οι Dani Wilde και Oli Brown.
