Οι Beggars Opera ήταν ένα σκωτσέζικο progressive rock συγκρότημα από τη Γλασκώβη της Σκωτίας , που σχηματίστηκε το 1969 από τον κιθαρίστα Ricky Gardiner (γεννήθηκε στις 31 Αυγούστου 1948, Εδιμβούργο , Σκωτία), τραγουδιστή Martin Griffiths (γεννήθηκε στις 8 Οκτωβρίου 1949 και Marshall Erskine μπάσο/φλάουτο) ,στρατολόγησαν τον Alan Park (πλήκτρα) (γεννήθηκε στις 10 Μαΐου 1951, Γλασκώβη , Σκωτία) και τον Raymond Wilson (ντραμς). Μετά από μια εντατική περίοδο στις πρόβες, εγκαταστάθηκαν στο Burns Howff club/pub στη West Regent Street στο κέντρο της Γλασκώβης. Ακολούθησαν περιοδείες στην Ευρώπη και το συγκρότημα βρήκε επιτυχία στη Γερμανία με την εμφάνιση τους στο θρυλικό Beat-Club της γερμανικής τηλεόρασης .
